Welcome to the website of the Bradwell-on-Sea Community Shop. Please have a look at the latest news below, and the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). Then send us your comments via the Feedback page. Our AimTo provide a convenient and friendly shop for local residents and visitors to Bradwell, and to make sure that the shop has a long-term future under the control of local residents. Latest News (9th February 2009)The shop has been well received by customers (particularly when the weather was bad), and is trading pretty much according to the business plan. A Shop Manager has been appointed, so look out for Steve and say hello to him. His hours are mainly at the start and end of trading, but he will be seen around the shop at other times as well. A volunteer co-ordinator has also come forward, and Katie will be contacting all volunteers (and a few potential ones) soon. She is planning a get-together at the Kings Head. We have also fixed the date for the Annual General Meeting at the village hall on Sunday 21st March at 3 pm. More information will be given on this nearer the date, but it will basically be an opportunity for the village to come along, meet the team and have their say. Information about the shopThe shop is open from 7-1 and 2-5 each day Mon-Sat and 9-1 on Sunday. It is good to see the shelves full and customers coming in, buying a few things and having a bit of a gossip as well. Just what a village shop should be, except that this one is entirely financed by the local community (over £5000 was raised) and run by a small team of keen volunteers. We have managed to stock even more that was expected, for example we have a lot of local produce
Plus of course the usual frozen, chilled and tinned goods. Also available are free-range Tillingham eggs, and also Bulls eggs from Bradwell (and jams/chutneys) on a Weds afternoon only because Dave & Ruth Bull are two of our volunteers. There has been a vast amount of effort put in by a small team of volunteers, who deserve a lot of credit for the way that they have stuck to the task. Some volunteers are also coming forward, but we need more, so please respond on the Feedback form if you can help, and you have not heard yet from our telephone team! The phone number of the shop is 01621 776274 The Business PlanA business plan has been drawn up, and can be downloaded here (in pdf format). Loans and donationsWe have received over £5000 in loans and donations earlier this year. If you want more information then click on Loans for a list of common questions The Post OfficeThe Post Office which used to be inside the shop was officially closed in 2007, which is normally a death sentence. However Essex County Council have a scheme where they pay for Post Offices to be re-opened, and they have offered to include Bradwell in that scheme. The latest date for the Post Office is March 2010. Until then the shop will offer as many postal services as it can, such as selling stamps.
